Michigan Department of Education-Low Incidence Outreach Web Site (MDE-LIO)

The current MDE-LIO program was previously known as Michigan School for the Blind-Low Incidence Outreach. MDE-LIO staff provide outreach services to all LEA's, PSA's, ISD's, children with a visual impairment, students who are deaf/hard of hearing and their families, as well as other resource agencies.

The overarching goal is to provide technical assistance and resources to enable local service providers to serve and improve the quality of education for students with a visual impairment or those who are deaf/hard of hearing including those with multiple impairments.

Services currently available include:

  • Production of Enlarged Print and Braille books
  • Book Research (alternate format educational materials), email msdb-imc@michigan.gov
  • Michigan School for the Blind Trust Fund Scholarships
  • American Printing House for the Blind (APH) Federal Quota
  • Helpline (888) 760-2206 toll free, (810) 760-2735 direct or email msdb-outreach@michigan.gov
  • Consultation around specific student needs (assessment and programming)
  • Library for Loan: Professional reference materials, children's fiction in Braille and enlarged print, and textbooks in Braille and enlarged print
  • Sign Language Proficiency Interviews (SLPI)
  • Educational Interpreter Project
  • Regional Assistive Technology workshops
  • Regional Braille classes
  • Regional Independent Living Skills (ILS) workshops
  • Orientation and Mobility Task Force
  • Program Improvement Process: programs for students with a visual impairment
  • Conferences and workshops for professional staff and parents
  • Quality Programs for Students with a Visual Impairment (QPVI)
  • Collaborative work with the Michigan Commission for the Blind (MCB)
  • Collaborative work with Division on Deafness and Hard of Hearing (DOD/HH)
  • Collaborative work with DB Central
  • Collaborative work with the Office of Educational Assessment & Accountability (OEAA)
