Beginning Workshop

Agenda

This year's workshop will be Tuesday – Thursday, May 15-17 in Bellaire at Shanty Creek Resort, Summit Village. For the conference fee, attendees receive expert instruction on library administration and structure, hot library law topics and alternatives to the Dewey Decimal system. Sessions also include collection development and weeding, patron service, reference, teen services, genealogy, e-government,

This conference is geared for library staff who have not had the opportunity for formal library coursework. Its aim is to introduce staff to a variety of topics and offer them practical skills that they can use at the desk. Anyone new to the profession or just hired at a library, no matter what their academic credentials, is welcome. The Library of Michigan's Beginning Workshop is obligatory for anyone seeking an initial Level 4 certificate and is also needed for an initial Level 3 certificate. Library of Michigan Beginning Workshop attendance is valid for the initial application for certification for five years after the date of attendance. Attendance at the Beginning Workshop does not provide automatic certification. Attendees are responsible for submitting a complete application packet as stipulated at http://www.michigan.gov/librarycertification.

Continuing Education

• What is a CEU - Continuing Education Unit?
The Continuing Education Unit (CEU), is a standard unit of measure for quantifying continuing adult education and training activities. The CEU is in the public domain and may be offered by any organization. One CEU equals 10 contact hours of participation in an organized education/training experience under responsible, qualified direction and instruction. State Board-Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs) are credits given for Michigan Department of Education approved inservices, workshops, or trainings. The Library of Michigan awards CEUs in 1 hour increments (.1 CEU) and SB-CEUs in 3 hour increments (.3 CEU). The Library of Michigan awards CEUs/SB-CEUs to sponsoring organizations for educational activities and may pre-approve CEUs for individuals involved in non-CEU granting educational activities.

Most of the courses listed here are approved for CEU credit by the Library of Michigan. Not all are free. Please check the Pre-Approved CEU Class List to confirm the CEUs accepted and documentation requirements.

• Idaho Commission for Libraries - Able Program
The Alternative Basic Library Education (ABLE) Program is designed to help library staff members who have no formal education in library science to acquire the basic knowledge and skills needed to operate or work in a library through general classes.

• Idaho Commission for Libraries - Sable Program
The Supplemental Alternative Basic Library Education (SABLE) Program is designed to help library staff members who have no formal education in library science to acquire the basic knowledge and skills needed to operate or work in a library through more specific classes.

• Indiana University School of Information and Library Science
Shaping Outcomes course from the Indiana University library school. It is an instructor moderated outcome-based evaluation course. The course is tuition based and runs every four to six weeks.

• LYRASIS - Classes & Events
Non-profit library collaborative that provides online classes and workshops on a large range of topics. Fee based.

• Midwest Collaborative for Library Services - Online Training Center
Offers various MeL database courses. Select classes with the location Online Workshop.

• Ohio Library Council - Marketing the Library
Staff training program for public library marketing. Six self-paced modules with examples, exercises, quizzes and links.

• Ohio Library Council - ORE Ohio Reference Excellence
Staff training program for public library reference services. Six self-paced modules with examples, exercises, quizzes and links.

• UW-Madison School of Library & Information Studies - Online Continuing Education Courses
Each academic term, the UW-Madison SLIS is offering a selection of moderated online courses for a fee on library continuing education topics.
