Michigan Reads!

Michigan Reads logo

The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce the 2012 Michigan Reads! book is Moose on the Loose by Kathy-jo Wargin and illustrated by John Bendall-Brunello. Moose on the Loose is full of movement and activity as a little boy meets up with a moose. Using cause-and-effect prose, the reader travels with the moose through the catchy, rhyming text, anticipating the moose's next moves as the boy tries to keep up with this outdoor animal on the run. The story, the language, the rhythm of the questions, and the wonderful illustrations all work together to make Moose on the Loose a read-aloud that both children and older readers will want to experience again and again.

The programming guide is available now to allow teachers, caregivers and librarians time to plan programs and curriculum around the book.

2012 Michigan Reads Programming and Resource Guide

The kits will be shipping in August to public libraries, schools with K-2 classrooms, and Headstart and Great Start Readiness programs. The program launch, including the start of the author tour, will be on Friday, September 7th, to coincide with International Literacy Day on September 8th. You can also continue to use materials from previous years with your students and children. These can be found at the links in the left navigation bar.

Frequently Asked Questions about Michigan Reads!

September and October are the months we concentrate on the Michigan Reads! program. We send out Michigan Reads! kits to all public library outlets (main libraries and branches), Head Start Programs, Great Start Readiness Programs, and public schools serving Kindergarten through second grade. These kits will include a hardcover copy of the year's book, a programming and resource guide filled with ideas to use in conjunction with the book; a poster, bookmarks, and stickers to use with the kids.

The Library of Michigan would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2011 Michigan Reads! One State, One Children's Book program. This was the most successful year yet, reaching more children in more libraries and classrooms. The program focuses on the importance of reading and sharing books with children, especially toddlers through early elementary, and the vital role libraries play in providing access to the quality books, programs and services that lay the foundation for reading and school success.

For the fifth year in a row in 2011, Target continued its generous sponsorship of "Michigan Reads!", helping librarians, early childhood educators, parents, and caregivers with materials and ideas to help children develop literacy skills through play-based activities. The program also had additional support from the Library of Michigan Foundation, Sleeping Bear Press and the Taubman Corporation.

The information and program ideas on this site have been developed by librarians from across Michigan to help further the goals of Michigan Reads!:
