Library Services and Technology Act - LSTA
Introduction to LSTA - www.michigan.gov/lsta
The Library of Michigan distributes federal funds received under the Museum and Library Services Act of 2003, incorporating the Library Services and Technology Act of 1996 (LSTA), to support statewide initiatives and competitive grant programs.
Through the legislation, the Institute for Museum and Library Services, an independent federal agency, provides grants to State Library Administrative Agencies to improve and support library, museum and information services. LSTA outlines two broad priorities for funding:
  1. to encourage activities that use technology for information sharing among libraries and between libraries and other community agencies;
  2. to support programs that make library resources more accessible to urban and rural localities, low-income residents, and others having difficulty using library services.
If you have questions regarding LSTA, please contact Karren Reish at reishk@michigan.gov or (517) 241-0021.

Modeling the Future

• Modeling the Future
Modeling the Future is the LSTA competitive grant program. You can find further information in the Program Handbook listed below. In fiscal years that grants are offered, eligible libraries may begin the application process by submitting an Intent to File by the last business day of June.

The competitive grant program is not being funded until further notice. The Library of Michigan's primary goal in our Five-Year Plan for 2007 through 2012 is to "increase equity of information access and library resources by providing basic statewide access to information and resources..." The Michigan eLibrary, with its constituent parts of the databases and MeLCat, best meets this goal. In these uncertain times, we feel continuing full support of these areas is the best use of Michigan's LSTA funds. We have found broad approval of this priority and appreciate the support we receive for MeL. We hope to return to the Modeling the Future program in the future.

The Modeling the Future subgrant program includes the requirement to complete a scalable project manual for other libraries to replicate the project in their own community. These three manuals from previous grantees offer instruction and advice on services for rural residents, immigrants and teens respectively.
