Reading Instruction Requirements for Teaching Certificates
Implementation of Public Acts 118 (2006) and 32 (2007)
Effective July 1, 2009, satisfactory completion of a 3-credit course of study with appropriate field experiences in the diagnosis and remediation of reading disabilities and differentiated instruction is required for teachers before they can be recommended for a professional teaching certificate.
MDE approved courses listed by EPI which fulfill the PA 32 requirement.
Caution is advised to applicants seeking to fulfill this requirement through out-of-state institutions as many courses do not meet the requirements under Michigan law, or the out-of-state institution may not be able to complete the verification form assuring compliance.
EPIs seeking to offer Advanced Reading Course of Study must complete an application and receive MDE approval. For questions related to the application or application process, contact: Dr. Catherine Wigent by email WigentC@michigan.gov.
Public Act 32 of 2007 is also cited as MCL 380.1531 (Section 1531 of The Revised School Code Act 451 of 1976).
