- Susan Broman - Deputy Superintendent

Susan K. Broman is currently the Deputy Superintendent for the Office of Great Start.  The Office of Great Start, created by Executive Order No. 2011-8, consolidates early childhood programs and resources under a single agency in an effort to maximize child outcomes, reduce duplication and administrative overhead, and reinvests resources into quality improvement and service delivery. The new office will refocus the state's early childhood investment, policy and administrative structures by adopting a single set of early childhood outcomes. The initial programs/services that have been brought together in the Office of Great Start are the Office of Early Childhood Education and Family Services, Head Start State Collaboration Office, and the Office of Child Development and Care. Both the Office of Child Development and Care and the Head Start State Collaboration Office were previously housed in the Department of Human Services.

Before becoming deputy superintendent, Broman was president of the Steelcase Foundation, an endowment unit of Steelcase Inc., the global leader in the office furniture industry. Susan managed the growth, grant allocations and general direction of the Foundation, which had assets of more than $100 million. Prior to joining Steelcase in 1996, Susan was deputy director for contracts administration at the Kent County Health Department, where she oversaw the allocation of resources and administration of contracts related to various health services.

Susan earned a bachelor of science degree in sociology from Western Michigan University in 1975, as well as a master’s degree in counseling and personnel in 1976.
