Great Parents, Great Start
The Department of Education administers the 2012-2013 Great Parents, Great Start portion of the Early Childhood Block Grant. The program is supported through Section 32p of the State School Aid Act, as amended, Public Act 201 of 2012. The Great Parents, Great Start Program portion of the Early Childhood Block Grant provides $5 million in continuation funding for collaborative community efforts to develop parent involvement and education programs. Intermediate school district grantees may only request an amount not to exceed the district's 2011-2012 Section 32j payment. Each grant must offer services to families with children age five or younger (not yet age-eligible for kindergarten) residing within the intermediate school district who choose to participate, including at least all of the following services:
- information on the development of children from birth to age five, and examples of learning opportunities that promote their development.
- methods to enhance parent-child interaction to promote comprehensive development of infants and toddlers.
- promotion of access to needed community services through a community-school-home partnership.
This grant builds upon the experience gained through the All Students Achieve Program - Parent Involvement in Education (ASAP-PIE) grants.
