Mackinac Bridge Authority may adjust tolls in 2008

November 7, 2007 -- At its Nov. 2 meeting, the Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) board announced plans to host three public hearings regarding a proposed adjustment to tolls in 2008.

"In order to responsibly operate the bridge and continue investing in our long-term preservation program, we simply need more funds," said MBA Board Chairman William H. Gnodtke. "As components of the bridge need to be repaired or replaced, the toll money pays for them. Rising material costs and the nature of necessary future repairs have caused us to look at adjusting tolls - mainly because of the age of the bridge and need for re-decking in about 2017."

The MBA board unanimously approved a motion to gather feedback at public hearings in early December 2007. The toll rates at the Mackinac Bridge were last adjusted in 2003. The 50-year-old bridge is maintained and operated exclusively with toll revenue.

Gnodtke added, "The Mackinac Bridge is a well-known Michigan landmark that we want to keep in great shape for generations to come."
