MDOT suspends numerous road and bridge projects to ease Memorial Day travel

May 24, 2005 - - With an estimated 1.3 million Michigan residents traveling over the Memorial Day weekend, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is suspending construction on state roads and bridges whenever possible to make driving easier.

Beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 27, and continuing through 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31, MDOT will open lanes and suspend work on 57 of 183 currently active projects.

MDOT is responsible for nearly 10,000 miles of state highways that carry approximately 80 percent of all motor vehicle travel. For the 2005 construction season, the department has posted 45 mile per hour speed limits in all construction zones that are marked with barrels and cones.

"Even though work will be suspended on numerous projects over the Memorial Day weekend, motorists still need to drive with caution through construction work zones, obey speed limits, buckle up and pay attention —even if workers are not present," said State Transportation Director Gloria J. Jeff. "Areas of the roadway designated as work zones have been modified from the normal roadway. These modifications include lane width reduction, lane closures, lane shifts or other modifications, all of which necessitate lower speed limits and increased motorist caution."

Motorists can always check current lane closures on the MDOT Web site under "Quick Links" at www.michigan.gov/mdot. The following is a list of work zones that will remain active, or have lane restrictions, during the Memorial Day weekend. If necessary, detour routes will be posted at the project location.
