February 1, 2008 - -A new type of traffic signal is coming to Michigan highways. The new signals are known as "flashing yellow left-turn signals" and will eventually replace all flashing red left-turn signals.
The key is that the new flashing yellow arrow means: turn with caution.
According to a national study by federal safety officials, drivers make fewer mistakes with the new signals than with traditional red left-turn arrow signals. There are already eight signals installed on Michigan state highways, with 17 more on the way this year, and more than 300 locations expected to change in the next five years. Currently, there are signals in Lansing, Jackson, Howell, Grand Rapids and Ludington; with more expected this year in Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Benton Harbor, Flint and Metro Detroit. (Signals along local routes will be updated by county road commissions and cities.)
