August 11, 2008 -- Rumble strips save lives! The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is getting this safety message out with a new video playing at Michigan Welcome Centers across the state. The video also is available online at www.michigan.gov/mdot.

"This important life-saving initiative supports the Strategic Highway Safety Plan and is part of the Governor's Traffic Safety Advisory Commission's goal of making our roads safer," said MDOT Director Kirk T. Steudle. "Over the next few years, MDOT will install centerline rumble strips on 5,700 miles of our rural highways and 1,700 miles of shoulders."

The one-minute public service announcement, produced by MDOT, delivers a key message: Rumble strips save lives! Volunteers on the project included: Clinton County Sheriff's Department, Michigan State Police, Ovid-Middlebury Emergency Services, Ovid Police Department, and the Portland Ambulance Department.

MDOT is investing $8 million over a three-year period to install centerline rumble strips, as well as shoulder rumble strips, on the state's rural two- and four-lane highways.
