MDOT plans busy construction season near Marquette

April 13, 2009 -- Significant road repair is scheduled for the three state highways entering Marquette (US-41, M-28 and M-553) this construction season, and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) urges motorists to be prepared and patient when traveling in the area.

"Since several projects meeting the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) criteria for selection were in the Marquette area, US-41/M-28 to both the east and west of Marquette, and M-553 to the south, will see construction this season," said Andy Sikkema, MDOT Ishpeming Transportation Service Center (TSC) manager. "Though this will mean some delays for motorists, we also are able to advance several projects that otherwise would not have been completed for perhaps several years."

While MDOT is working with contractors to avoid overlapping schedules where possible, some work will need to be done at the same time. Projects scheduled for this summer include:

- Pavement resurfacing and repair on US-41/M-28 eastbound from Wal-Mart to Washington Street, and at the Washington Street intersection. This project is scheduled to begin May 29 and be completed by June 21. This project will require single-lane closures, and motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes. Businesses along this route will remain open during construction. This is an ARRA-funded project.

- Concrete pavement repairs on US-41/M-28 from Genesee Street to the Carp River. This project is scheduled to begin May 4 and be completed by June 15. This project will require single-lane closures, and motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes. Businesses will remain open during construction, though left turns may be restricted for short durations. This is an ARRA-funded project.

- Concrete pavement repairs on US-41/M-28 from the M-28 intersection to the Marquette Welcome Center. This project is scheduled to begin May 4 and be completed by June 15. Businesses will remain open during construction, though left turns may be restricted. This is an ARRA-funded project.

- Concrete pavement replacement, intersection improvements and signal replacement at the US-41/M-28 intersection in Harvey. This project is scheduled to begin after July 4 and be completed in September. This work will require the construction and use of temporary lanes and run-around road, single-lane closures and detour routes. Motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

- Pavement repairs on US-41 from M-28 to Big Creek Road. This project is scheduled to begin after July 4 and take three weeks to be completed. This work will require lane closures with flag control, and motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes. This is an ARRA-funded project.

- Resurfacing of M-553 from US-41 to County Road 480. This project is scheduled to take six weeks for completion, between June and September. This work will require lane closures with flag control and traffic shifts in multi-lane sections. Motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes. Work on the section of M-553 (McClellan Avenue) from US-41 to Wilson Street will be done at night to reduce motorist inconvenience.
