Weight restrictions have been lifted in Lower Michigan and in part of the Upper Peninsula

Contact:  Bill Shreck, MDOT Director of Communications, 517-335-3084
Agency: Transportation

April 15, 2009 -- Effective 8 a.m., Thursday, April 16, seasonal weight restrictions will no longer be in effect for state trunkline highways from the southern Michigan border north to and including US-2 from I-75 to the Wisconsin stateline in Iron Mountain. Weight restrictions are still in effect for the remainder of the state. State trunkline highways typically carry M, I, or US designations.

There are no restrictions for legal axle weight loads on roads designated as "all-season trunklines." On routes designated as "seasonal," there will be a posted reduction of 25 percent for rigid pavements and 35 percent for flexible pavements.

All extended permits will be valid for oversized loads in the weight-restricted area on the restricted routes. Single-trip permits will not be issued for any overweight loads or loads exceeding 14 feet in width on the restricted routes.

For weight restriction information and updates, call 800-787-8960, or you can access this information on MDOT's Web site at www.michigan.gov/mdot. Under "Favorite Links," click on "Truckers."

All-season routes are designated in green and gold on the MDOT Truck Operators Map, which is available online at www.michigan.gov/mdot/0,1607,7-151-9622_11033_32060-98220--,00.html.

Trucking companies located in New Jersey and Canada can obtain information by calling 517-373-6256.

Detailed weight restriction information may be obtained by calling 517-373-2121.
