I-94 widening and South Westnedge Avenue interchange project to break ground in June

April 16, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is preparing to break ground on the estimated $52 million I-94 widening project between Oakland Drive and Portage Road in the city of Portage. The three-year project is expected to start in mid-June with this year's work causing little disruption for I-94 and Westnedge Avenue traffic.

This year's work primarily will consist of building lane crossovers and temporary median pavement in preparation for the 2010 and 2011 work. In addition, construction of a new median portion of the bridge over the railroad tracks, Portage Creek and the Portage Creek Bicentennial Trail will begin.

Median bridge work is expected to close the Portage Creek Bicentennial Trail under I-94 starting in late June.

In an effort to minimize disruptions for local businesses and travelers, MDOT will provide work plans as they develop, including a public open house this summer to give residents and business owners the opportunity to learn project details, timing and impacts.

MDOT is committed to working with the city of Portage, its residents and businesses throughout this project to ensure effective planning and minimal impacts.

MDOT: Working to improve our state roads and bridges.
