April 28, 2009 -- A $3.5 million investment to resurface more than 9 miles of M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) is expected to begin on Monday, May 11, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The resurfacing work will take place between 14 Mile and 23 Mile roads, with a portion in Mt. Clemens and Clinton Township set aside for a future project.
"We are excluding the downtown portion of Mt. Clemens on this project due to the historic nature of the bridges that carry northbound and southbound Gratiot Avenue over the Clinton River," said Drew Buckner, manager of MDOT's Macomb Transportation Service Center. "The southbound Gratiot Avenue bridge over the Clinton River is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and any rehabilitation must be coordinated with the State Historic Preservation Office. We are working to get the necessary environmental clearance and have that structure rehabilitated in the near future."
The Gratiot Avenue resurfacing will begin on May 11 at three locations: on northbound M-3 from 14 Mile to Remick Road, southbound M-3 from Sunnyview Road to 14 Mile Road, and both directions between 21 and 23 Mile roads. The section between Henry Joy Road and 21 Mile Road will be completed later this summer after a local railroad crossing project in the area is completed.
During construction, crews may close multiple lanes in each direction. Motorists who routinely travel Gratiot Avenue in Macomb County are advised to allow extra time.
