May 8, 2009 -- In cooperation with the city of Munising, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is repainting the four-lane section of M-28 to include a center left-turn lane, and one lane of traffic in each direction.
The city of Munising intends to install a new traffic signal at the M-28/Elm Street intersection this summer. This new lane configuration will allow traffic to flow smoothly through the city, and promote safety at this intersection.
On Monday, May 11, crews will be removing concrete lane dividers at the M-28/H-58 intersection. This work will require lane closures with flag control.
On Monday and Tuesday, workers will be installing a new stop sign and flashing beacon for westbound H-58 traffic at the M-28 intersection. Because there will only be one westbound lane on M-28, westbound H-58 traffic will now have to stop at this intersection before proceeding.
On Wednesday, crews will be grinding old pavement markings and painting new ones in the three-lane configuration. When the new pavement markings are completed, the new stop sign will be uncovered and the flashing beacon activated.
Later this summer, crews will return and complete pavement markings that are recessed into the road surface, which will improve their durability.
