September 24, 2009 -- A project to improve traffic operations at the I-275/6 Mile Road interchange in Livonia will begin on Monday, Sept. 28, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The project entails removing the merge lane used by traffic exiting northbound I-275 to westbound 6 Mile Road. Upon completion, the northbound-to-westbound movement will operate like a signalized intersection, protecting turning traffic with the installation of a new traffic signal.
In order to accommodate the changes and reconfigure the interchange, crews will reduce eastbound and westbound 6 Mile Road over I-275 to a single lane. This will allow crews to remove the median that currently separates merging traffic from the ramp from through-traffic on 6 Mile Road.
During construction, the existing two-lane exit ramp will be reduced to a single lane. Ramp traffic will be allowed only onto eastbound 6 Mile Road. Motorists looking to access westbound 6 Mile Road will follow northbound I-275, westbound 7 Mile Road, and southbound I-275.
This $360,000 investment is scheduled to be completed in November.
