September 29, 2009 -- Michigan bragging rights are on the table, which is why the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is asking residents to vote for the M-115 project in Clare County to win the People's Choice transportation award. The award will be decided by popular vote in a competition sponsored by AAA, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).
Earlier this month, the M-115 project was selected as one of America's 10 best transportation projects in the "innovative management" category of the national competition, making it eligible to compete for the People's Choice Award. Online voting is now under way at the competition's official Web site through Oct. 23 at www.americastransportationaward.org. The award will be announced at the Oct. 25 AASHTO annual meeting in Palm Desert, Calif.
"Not only was the M-115 project innovative, it was completed 20 days ahead of schedule," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "We are proud of this national recognition for our dedicated employees."
The M-115 project involved upgrading 5.5 miles of a rural two-lane highway from Lake Station Avenue to the Osceola/Clare county line. MDOT invested approximately $4.5 million to repair M-115 and make guardrail upgrades and bridge replacements. The project used several innovative construction techniques, including pre-cast bridge construction, self-adjusting temporary signals, temporary object markers to eliminate vehicle run offs, and a best value award process that took mobility and construction staging, along with safety and cost, into account. During construction, traffic delays averaged two minutes, 16 seconds. The project was accomplished with a $1 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration's Highways for Life safety program.
