MDOT to begin construction on I-96 in Clinton and Eaton counties

Contact:  Kari Arend, MDOT Office of Communications, 517-750-0406
Agency: Transportation

October 6, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will oversee improvements to I-96 between Wacousta Road in Clinton County and M-43 (Saginaw Highway) in Eaton County starting this month. The work this fall is in anticipation of a two-year, $40 million reconstruction project on I-96 and M-43 in 2010 and 2011. This project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Crews will begin building median crossovers and reconstructing the shoulders on I-96 as a way to help maintain traffic next year. The majority of work this fall will take place at night, with one lane closed in each direction while work is taking place. During daylight hours, there will be shoulder closures in each direction on I-96.

Starting in spring of 2010, 6.6 miles of I-96 will be reconstructed, along with bridge and ramp rehabilitation, drainage improvements, guardrail upgrades and a carpool lot expansion at Grand River Avenue. During construction, at least two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction on I-96 at all times.

In 2011, M-43 will be reconstructed between Marketplace Boulevard and Canal Road, along with intersection widening, ramp improvements, and signal upgrading. During construction, at least one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on M-43 at all times.
