November 9, 2009 -- Crossroads Restaurant in Marquette County's Sands Township and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) have partnered to provide a new commuter carpool lot near the intersection of M-553 and County Road 480.

In exchange for using a portion of the restaurant's property, MDOT paved a gravel area commuters had already been using, and provided signs designating it an official carpool lot. "This was a location that commuters had chosen for its convenience," said Andy Sikkema, MDOT's Ishpeming Transportation Service Center (TSC) manager. "Making it an official carpool lot adds to that convenience."

In the future, this lot may become a pick-up and drop-off location for local transit buses.
