maintaining crossing traffic counts

Accurate information is particularly important to determine statewide priorities for safety enhancement funding, as required by federal and state law. Road Authorities are asked to provide updated traffic counts to the Rail Safety Section at least every three years.

The Federal Railroad Administration maintains a national inventory of railroad crossings. Crossings are assigned an identification number that is posted on the signage or warning devices at crossings.

A list of all public crossings within a jurisdiction can be provided to a local road authority, upon request.

Count Guidelines
  • Counters placed near the railroad crossing, with consideration to potential interference from side streets and driveways
  • Conducted for at least a 24-hour period, during the week, at a time that would reflect normal traffic patterns for all directions of traffic over the crossing.
  • Engineer's estimate of the ADT is acceptable if actual traffic counts cannot be conducted

inventory update

The Federal Railroad Administration requires all railroads and States to update the U.S. DOT National Crossing Inventory annually. Updates are required annually by September 30th.

Railroads should submit completed National Inventory Forms to the Rail Safety Section for completion of Section V and submittal to the Federal Railroad Administration.
