A limousine is any private vehicle, regardless of body style, that is used to transport 15 or fewer passengers (including the driver) in exchange for compensation of any kind. Limousine transportation is a state-regulated industry and a business license is required.

What should consumers look for?

• Operators must be licensed by MDOT, carry sufficient liability insurance, and undergo annual safety inspections on all their vehicles.
• To see if a company is insured and licensed, check MDOT's list of authorized carriers, or call 517-241-0679 or 517-241-0680 (during regular business hours).
• A certificate of authority issued by the Michigan Department of Transportation must be permanently displayed on the left side, rear-most window.
• A limo driver must keep a current copy of his/her driving record available for review by any passenger.
• Consumers should check references, and if possible, visit the company and look at the vehicles.
