New intersections and signals
When walking or driving, you may encounter the new or unique types of intersections and signals described below. The Michigan Department of Transportation adopts new designs based on our own engineering studies and the experiences of other states. The aim is always to make our roads safer and better.

• Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI)
A new type of interchange for Michigan. In a SPUI, one traffic signal at the center of the interchange controls all left turns.

• Michigan Lefts
This indirect left turn is common in our state.

• Roundabouts
