September 28, 2007 -- International Bridge customers paying with Canadian currency again will see the toll rate reduced, thanks to the continued strength of the Canadian dollar. The rate changes, effective Monday, Oct. 1, are the result of the mandated currency exchange rate review conducted by bridge officials twice each year.
Starting Oct. 1, the passenger vehicle rate will be reduced from $2.25 to $2.20. IQ Card deposits will decrease from $19.20 to $18.60. All other Canadian currency toll rates will be adjusted as well.
"With the required, semi-annual currency equity review, the rate continues to get better for our customers paying with Canadian currency," said Phil Becker, International Bridge Administration (IBA) general manager.
The intergovernmental agreement under which the bridge operates mandates that the currency exchange rate be equalized every April and October, if the currency difference is large enough. The IBA is required to keep toll equity to within five cents in relation to currency exchange rates.
U.S. currency is used as the benchmark for any changes.
"This adjustment is based on the average currency exchange rate for the period of March 1, 2007 to Sept. 1, 2007," Becker said.

The IBA will be offering extended hours for commuters wishing to purchase the new I.Q. Prox Card. Each Thursday in October, Prox Cards will be available from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., in addition to the regular hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
