February 27, 2008 -- The International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie is well-maintained and in good condition, the International Bridge Administration (IBA) reported to the Joint International Bridge Authority (JIBA) board today.
The bridge authority hired Parsons of New York, N.Y., to lead the 46th annual, weeklong inspection in September 2007. Parsons subcontracted some of the inspection work to Delcan Corp. of Markham, Ontario, and Extreme Access of Bend, Oregon.
"The IBA schedules an extensive inspection of the bridge each year, exceeding the United States and Canadian governments' requirement that bridges be inspected every two years," said IBA General Manager Phil Becker. "The International Bridge is an important link between our countries, and the inspection is a valuable tool for guiding ongoing maintenance and preservation."
A biannual inspection of the fracture critical members of the structure was also performed in 2008 as part of the inspection. All critical components were found to be in good condition.
Various 2007 capital and maintenance projects are ongoing or have been completed since the previous inspection, and a list of future maintenance projects has been submitted as part of the inspection report.
The total cost for the inspection was $99,771.
