Motorists warned to obey signals, speed limits in International Bridge construction zone

Contact:  Phil Becker, International Bridge Administration, 906-635-5255, ext. 112
Agency: Transportation

May 19, 2009 -- The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge Administration (IBA) is warning motorists that they must obey temporary traffic signals and speed limits in the construction zone on the bridge.

The IBA has been observing many motorists running the red lights that control two-way traffic in the single open lane through the deck rehabilitation project work zone. They are also observing speeders in the vicinity of the work zone.

Violation of traffic signals and speed limits can endanger motorists and passengers, construction workers, and International Bridge staff. Traffic through the work zone is under video surveillance and police agencies patrol the bridge.

Work to rehabilitate a portion of the roadway deck in the vicinity of the Canadian Arch Truss on the International Bridge began May 11, and is expected to be done by June 26. The $1.1 million (CDN) project includes removal of the blacktop surface and placement of a specialized concrete surface.
