BACKGROUND: MDOT will be closing the I-96 freeway between Rosa Parks Boulevard and I-94. The closure is expected to be in effect for 90 days, beginning Monday, July 14, and ending in mid-October. During this time, MDOT will reconstruct one mile of the I-96 freeway, along with new storm drains and freeway lighting. Access to Mexicantown, southwest and downtown Detroit, and the Ambassador Bridge will be maintained throughout construction. Detours will be posted and updated detour maps will be available to the public. This closure is part of MDOT's ongoing I-75 Ambassador Bridge Gateway Project. This major infrastructure reconstruction has been under way along the I-75/I-96 corridor between Rosa Parks Boulevard and Clark Street in southwest Detroit since early 2008. The Ambassador Bridge Gateway Project, which is now 40 percent complete, is bringing approximately $170 million in improvements to this economically vital area that includes southwest Detroit, Mexicantown, and the Ambassador Bridge.
