MDOT to begin construction next week on I-69 in Shiawassee County

July 8, 2009 -- Starting Monday, July 13, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will oversee improvements to I-69 between M-52 and M-13. Improvements include the installation of a median cable barrier from M-52 east to the Genesee County line, and resurfacing almost 8 miles of pavement between M-52 and the Shiawassee River. The resurfacing work on I-69 is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
The guardrail project is a new type of guardrail being used in Michigan and is a low-cost solution for reducing cross-median crashes, as well as the severity of median-related crashes. The median guardrail installed as part of this project will mirror what was previously installed along I-69 in Genesee County.
During construction, one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on I-69 at all times. For the resurfacing portion of the project, all work will take place at night only between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., Monday through Saturday.
For work on the median guardrail, lane closures will be in effect on eastbound I-69 between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., and from 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., Monday through Saturday. On westbound I-69, single-lane closures can occur between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., and from 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., Monday through Saturday. Shoulder closures on I-69 also will occur.
Lane closures will be 2 miles in length, with a minimum of 4 miles of space between each closure. All work is expected to be completed by November 2009.
