Michigan public transit drivers to compete in Annual Small Bus Roadeo

WHAT: The 34th Annual Michigan Small Bus Roadeo is a statewide bus operators' skills test competition and training event to determine the best public transit small bus drivers in Michigan. Drivers must navigate an obstacle course, take a written exam, board a passenger using a wheelchair and conduct a vehicle safety inspection at the event. The Roadeo reinforces safe driving habits and professionalism behind the wheel, ensuring the safety of passengers.

WHO: Approximately 45 small bus drivers, representing 17 transit agencies
Representatives of the corporate sponsors of the event
Michigan Public Transit Association (MPTA)
Michigan Association of Transportation Systems (MASSTrans)
Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT)
Law enforcement personnel serving as judges

WHEN: Friday, Oct. 30, 2009--8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

WHERE: Mt. Pleasant Comfort Inn & Suites Hotel and Conference Center
2424 South Mission St., Mt. Pleasant

BACKGROUND: Winners will be announced at a noon luncheon. The event is sponsored by MDOT; MASSTrans; MPTA; Q'Straint, Inc.; A.C. Carrier Co.; Hoekstra Transportation, Inc.; ElDorado National; Holland Bus Co.; Arboc Mobility; and the Rural Transit Assistance Program.

The top three winners in the individual competition are eligible to compete in the national competition in Long Beach, Calif., in May 2010 at the Community Transportation of America Annual National Bus Roadeo held during its annual Expo.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm has proclaimed Oct. 30, 2009, as Public Transit Bus Driver Day in the State of Michigan.
