November 16, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has completed the first phase of the two-phase project to rebuild the I-94 Business Loop (BL) through downtown Benton Harbor in Berrien County.

Starting Tuesday, Nov. 24, downtown Benton Harbor will completely reopen to traffic for the winter.

"This is the beginning of a transformation of Benton Harbor to bring in more business and increase walkability of the downtown," said Paul South, manager of the MDOT Coloma Transportation Service Center. "This project will maintain Main Street traffic flow through downtown while making it safer and easier for pedestrians to access Benton Harbor's downtown businesses and community."

MDOT began work on April 13 to rebuild almost 2 miles of I-94 BL (Main Street) in Benton Harbor between Riverview Drive and Ox Creek, including new water mains, storm sewers, roundabouts, sidewalks, bicycle lanes and traffic signals. The new Main Street roundabouts at Riverview Drive and 5th Street also are complete.

Work on phase two, from Ox Creek to Fair Avenue, is scheduled to begin April 2010 and be completed by this time next year. During phase two, there will be one lane of eastbound traffic, and westbound traffic will be detoured on Territorial Road.

For up-to-date information on this project, go to the list of statewide lane closures at: www.michigan.gov/drive. Follow MDOT at www.twitter.com/MichiganDOT or visit the "Michigan Department of Transportation" page on Facebook and become a fan.
