March 15, 2010 -- The Michigan Department to Transportation (MDOT) is investing $51.3 million during 2010 and 2011 for road and bridge reconstruction work along M-84 and I-75 in Saginaw and Bay counties. Work begins tomorrow morning, Tuesday, March 16, and is expected to be completed by November 2011. Equipment and materials delivery, along with sewer construction and preliminary work which required single-lane closures on M-84, was completed last week.

Improvements on M-84 begin just south of Delta Road and extend north to M-13 (Euclid Avenue) through Frankenlust and Monitor townships in Bay County. Work on M-84 includes pavement and utility work, widening and resurfacing, sign and signal upgrades, culvert replacements at the Columbia Drain and Dutch Creek, bridge replacement work over I-75, and a bridge replacement over Squaconning Creek. The M-84 bridge over I-75 is expected to reopen in June.

I-75 improvements begin just north of Crane Road and continue north to Hotchkiss Road through Kochville, Frankenlust and Monitor townships in Saginaw and Bay counties. I-75 work includes concrete reconstruction, constructing a median enclosure with concrete barrier wall to allow for drainage work, safety and ramp improvements, bridge work over Squaconning Creek, culvert replacement over Goetz Drain, and M-84 bridge replacements over I-75.

Weather permitting, crews will begin construction work at 7 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, with the demolition of the M-84 bridge over I-75. The bridge will be completely closed with traffic detoured to Three Mile Road, Hotchkiss Road, and then back to M-84.

M-84, from Delta Road to west of the I-75 interchange, will have shoulder and lane closures in effect with traffic shifted.

During the daytime, crews will utilize shoulder and single-lane closures on I-75, along with traffic shifts to maintain traffic. At least two lanes will remain open at all times on northbound and southbound I-75.

The following nighttime road closures are scheduled this week on I-75 at M-84 to facilitate bridge demolition work:

- 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, to 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 17: Northbound I-75 will be closed at M-84.

- 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, to 6 a.m. Thursday, March 18: Southbound I-75 will be closed at M-84.

- Saturday, March 20: Northbound I-75 will be closed at M-84 to complete bridge demolition work.

Motorists traveling on I-75 during these scheduled road closures will be routed through the M-84 ramps at I-75, then back to I-75.

MDOT will announce the anticipated completion of the M-84 bridge demolition, along with any required I-75 nighttime lane closures beyond this week's schedule, as work progresses.

The purpose of the reconstruction work is to increase traffic safety and improve the overall condition of this highway.

This project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
