March 15, 2010 -- Crews are mobilizing to start the reconstruction of the two M-21 bridges over the Flat River in Lowell, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Prep-work starts today and includes the removal of miscellaneous lighting and the installation of a temporary sewer line to maintain service during construction. Intermittent lane and shoulder closures with flag control will be utilized during pre-stage work with minimal impact on traffic.
The removal and reconstruction of the two bridges begins April 5. Eastbound M-21 traffic will be maintained throughout the project and westbound traffic will be detoured south on Jackson Street, west on Grand River Drive and north on Hudson Street to M-21. The work is scheduled for completion in October.
"This marks the first reconstruction of these bridges since they were originally built in 1941," said Erick Kind, Grand Rapids Transportation Service Center manager. "This project was made possible from partnering with the city of Lowell and area business leaders."
The $2.15 million project will extend the service life of the bridges and increase ride quality. The barrier design was selected based on input from city officials and local stakeholders. The sidewalk and barrier upgrades will increase safety and improve aesthetics for both pedestrians and motorists in the downtown area.
