March 16, 2010 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) today announced that bridge crews will be mobilizing late this week to improve three US-31 Business Route (BR) bridges over the South Branch of the Muskegon River in the city of Muskegon. Locally known as "The Spider Web," this $2.14 million project includes structural rehabilitation and resurfacing of two bridges and the full replacement of the northbound US-31 BR bridge near Getty Street. The southbound US-31 BR crossing near Marquette Avenue was replaced in 2005.

The project will be completed in two stages with posted detours. Stage 1 will take place from March through May for bridge rehabilitation. Stage 2 occurs May through October with the closure and replacement of the northbound US-31 BR bridge near Getty Street. For stage maps and detour information, please see the attached PDF.

The improvements will extend the service life of the bridges and provide a smoother ride for motorists.
