March 16, 2010 -- In order to expedite the rebuilding of the bridges that carry I-96 over the CSX Railroad in Novi, crews will shift traffic beginning Saturday, March 20. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the shifting of westbound traffic to the eastbound side of the freeway will allow crews to close westbound I-96 from just west of Novi Road to just east of Beck Road.
Last year, crews constructed a temporary widening on the eastbound bridge so when the shift is in place, all three travel lanes will be maintained in both directions on I-96. Through the traffic shift area, the posted speed will be dropped to 60 mph. In addition, the entrance ramp from southbound Novi Road to westbound I-96 will be closed. Ramp traffic will be directed from Novi Road then westbound Grand River Avenue and northbound Beck Road to access westbound I-96.
The traffic switch to the eastbound lanes and ramp closure is expected to be removed in mid-July. This work is part of a two-year, $46 million investment to rehabilitate 4 miles of pavement and eight bridges on I-96 between Halsted and Beck roads that was started in April 2009.
