October 18, 2004- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announces that the Michigan Welcome Center on northbound I-75 in Monroe is closing for reconstruction. The Welcome Center building will be closed for approximately one year beginning Monday, Oct. 25, at 8 a.m.

The existing building and parking lots will be demolished and reconstructed. The redesigned Welcome Center will meet all current barrier-free standards. Improvements will include an energy efficient heating and cooling system, additional restroom facilities, a barrier-free lobby and a Travel Michigan visitor information center. Improvements to the parking lot also will be made, including expanding the truck and car parking areas.

During the reconstruction, the Travel Michigan visitor information will be available at the Horizon Outlet Mall, which is accessed from northbound I-75 via LaPlaisance Road (exit 11). The temporary visitor information facility will be at Store A-50, which is in the middle of the mall. The temporary Travel Michigan visitor information facility does not have restroom availability, nor does it have truck and bus facilities.

Trucks and buses are directed to use exit 210 (in Ohio) or exits 6, 15, 18 or 21 in Michigan off northbound I-75.

"The Monroe Welcome Center is the second busiest welcome center in the state. The new welcome center will be a completely redesigned, brand new facility that will meet all the current barrier-free standards. The new building will be energy efficient, parking lots will be expanded, and Travel Michigan will have an area in the lobby for brochures and public information," said Mark Pearson, MDOT Roadside Development Program Manager.
