February 28, 2005 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Metro Region is pleased to announce the formation of the Non-Motorized Advisory Committee. Created in January 2005, this committee will investigate ways to incorporate non-motorized plans that can interface with future road projects.
The committee is made up of representatives from 10 different groups, including MDOT; Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair counties' respective planning, parks departments and road commissions; the city of Detroit; and advocacy groups such as Rails-to-Trails, the League of Michigan Bicyclists, and the Michigan Mountain Bike Association.
"This partnering effort will ensure that non-motorized issues are brought to the table when formulating future regional transportation plans," said Metro Region Engineer Greg Johnson. "A comprehensive plan will benefit all areas of Metro Detroit by receiving input from our current partners."
Initially the partnership will build from the previous SEMCOG (Southeast Michigan Council of Governments) initiative to coordinate and prioritize non-motorized plans on a regional level. In addition, the committee will provide input and guidance on non-motorized planning initiatives, including the St. Clair County non-motorized plan, and the effort to restore the I-275 bike path in Wayne and Oakland counties.
