Baldwin Road over US-23 to close July 11; Torrey and Thompson Road bridges open to traffic ahead of schedule

Contact:  Bill Shreck 989-754-0878, ext. 227
Agency: Transportation

County: Genesee

Highway: Baldwin Road over US-23

Closest Cities: Between Flint and Fenton

Starting Date: Monday, July 11

Estimated Completion Date: Mid-August 2005

Project: The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be closing the Baldwin Road bridge over US-23, located south of Flint, on Monday, July 11, for bridge repairs. Baldwin Road traffic will be detoured to allow for bridge repairs.

To minimize inconvenience to motorists, the Baldwin Road bridge work was not allowed to start until the Thompson Road bridge work was completed. MDOT worked diligently with the contractor in order to open the Torrey Road bridge two days ahead of schedule, and the Thompson Road bridge one day ahead of schedule. These two bridges over US-23 originally had been scheduled to reopen July 8.

This bridge work is part of the US-23 reconstruction project, between Thompson Road (Exit 84) and the I-75/US-23 split.

Traffic Restrictions: The detour for eastbound Baldwin Road will be Linden Road south to Thompson Road, Thompson Road east to Torrey Road, then Torrey Road north back to Baldwin Road. Westbound Baldwin Road will use the opposite detour route.

Message boards along Baldwin Road will provide motorists with updated information. The bridge work is expected to be completed in mid-August 2005. For updated information about lane closures, go to the MDOT Web site at: http://www.mdot.state.mi.us/laneclosure/.

Customer Benefit: This work is part of a $28.3 million project that is expected to extend the life of the road by 20 to 25 years. It continues a commitment by MDOT and the Granholm administration to create jobs, improve quality of life and provide the highest quality transportation services for Michigan residents and businesses.
