September 30, 2005 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) today announced that crews are preparing to open the eastbound I-94 tied-arch bridge over US-24 (Telegraph Road) in Taylor. Crews plan to open the bridge this afternoon.
The westbound I-94 bridge over US-24 opened in early September 2005. The first-ever tied arch bridges are part of the state's efforts to preserve I-94 in Wayne County. The opening of the eastbound structure represents a significant milestone in the two-year project to restore one of the oldest freeways in the nation.
Construction began in spring 2004 on a $58 million project to realign four miles of eastbound and westbound I-94 between Beech Daly and Pelham roads in the city of Taylor. The realignment of the I-94/US-24 interchange required the construction of bridges that would carry the freeway over Telegraph Road. A public/private partnership, known as the Detroit Regional Gateways Advisory Council (DRGAC), raised funds to add the steel arches to the new structures.
The entire I-94 project is scheduled to be completed in December 2005.
