New Buffalo and Monroe Welcome Centers to open universally accessible playgrounds

Contact:  Janet Foran, MDOT Office of Communications, 517-335-7176
Agency: Transportation

WHAT: Join state dignitaries, special guests, children, and volunteers, as Travel Michigan officially opens two universally accessible playgrounds that will serve to welcome all children and families to Michigan. The playgrounds are part of the "Able to Play" project that resulted in 19 Boundless Playgrounds being built statewide. Michigan is the first state to build accessible playgrounds at its Welcome Centers, as well as the first state to establish a statewide network of universally accessible playgrounds for children of all abilities.

WHO: Representatives from the Michigan Department of Transportation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Travel Michigan, Boundless Playgrounds, Michigan Recreation and Park Association, invited staff, and children

WHEN: Wednesday, July 26, 2 p.m. (New Buffalo)
Thursday, July 27, 2 p.m. (Monroe)

WHERE: New Buffalo Welcome Center (Berrien County)
I-94 eastbound, Mile Marker 0
MDOT Chief Deputy Director Jackie Shinn will speak

Monroe Welcome Center (Monroe County)
I-75 northbound, Mile Marker 10
MDOT Director Kirk Steudle will speak

BACKGROUND: This effort will help continue Michigan's leadership in promoting access and rights for citizens with disabilities. These playgrounds, located at two of the state's most-visited Welcome Centers, will symbolize Michigan's commitment to providing recreational access for all. The Able to Play project also demonstrates the importance of play in the emotional, cognitive, and physical development of all children, regardless of ability.
