May 15, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that crews have closed lanes on eastbound M-14 where it crosses over the Rouge River in Plymouth Township. The lane closures were mandated after a recent bridge inspection caused concern among the department's structural engineers.

"We're going to err on the side of caution," said Metro Region Engineer Greg Johnson. "We are confident the structure will remain intact, but we are going to take every precaution before opening the lanes to traffic."

The latest bridge inspection on Tuesday, May 13, revealed that some elements of the substructure have begun to deteriorate. The lane restrictions will keep traffic off the area of concern until a repair can be made.

"We are going to get to work immediately to remedy this situation," Johnson said. "We are going to do everything in our power to get those lanes opened by Monday, May 19."

Until these lanes reopen, MDOT recommends that motorists use M-153 (Ford Road) or I-94 as an alternate route.
