| MDOT encourages motorists heading northbound on I-75 through Saginaw County to use alternate route

May 16, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is advising motorists to use an alternate route to avoid construction delays on northbound I-75. Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the summer vacation season. It is a time when motorists will be traveling north and traffic back-ups can be expected.
"We recognize that I-75 northbound lane closures across the Zilwaukee Bridge in Saginaw County will have a significant impact on tourist traffic heading up north for the holiday weekend," said MDOT Bay Region Engineer Tony Kratofil.
MDOT will be providing alternate route information to motorists heading for getaways in the northern lower and upper peninsulas of Michigan. Holiday travelers are advised to allow extra time to make the drive safely, especially if taking I-75 all the way north.
"We will be placing changeable message signs throughout the state at key points south of Saginaw County," Kratofil said. "We will also work with MDOT's Intelligent Transportation Systems Center to deploy messages on the large permanent message boards in the Detroit area."
Spotters also will be deployed to monitor traffic conditions and report back-up situations. MDOT will use this information to update the changeable message signs that will alert motorists.
For travel to the Upper Peninsula, northwest, west and northeast regions, including the Sunrise Side, Gaylord, Grand Traverse, Petoskey, Cadillac and Ludington areas, motorists are advised to use northbound US-127.
To further ease holiday travel to points north, MDOT is advising motorists to consider one of the following alternate routes, depending on their final destination: Lansing to the east side of the state, take US-127 north to M-20 east to US-10 east to I-75 (north of the Z-bridge); Genesee County Flint Area, take I-69 to I-75; Frankenmuth and Davison Area, take M-15 Heritage Route to I-75 (north of the Z-bridge); Brighton Area, take US-23 north to I-96 west to M-52 north to I-69 east to US-127; Ohio/Detroit Area, take US-23 north to I-94 west to US-127.
Lansing traffic headed to the west side of the state should use US-131 or US-31 to avoid the extra traffic on US-127.
Motorists choosing to remain on northbound I-75 through Saginaw County should follow the posted detour to I-675 northbound, back to I-75 northbound. Local traffic will be detoured from several on-ramps to I-675, including the off-ramp from I-675 northbound onto M-58 (Davenport Avenue); and the Michigan Avenue on-ramp to northbound I-675.
Local ramp closures will be in effect from Thursday, May 22, beginning at 3 p.m. until Saturday morning, May 24, at 6 a.m. to facilitate traffic heading north on I-675.
MDOT is working with area law enforcement agencies and Saginaw officials to implement strategies to move traffic as efficiently as possible on I-675.
Motorists are advised to slow down and proceed with extra caution through all work zones and to observe the posted speed limits.
