May 22, 2008 -- The detour route for the project M-37 over Penoyer Creek in Newaygo will be removed Friday, May 23, as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) completes the work on the bridge over the creek and the Marquette Railroad.
"We began this project in February with the goal of opening M-37 to traffic in time for Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer travel," said Tim Judge, MDOT's Muskegon Transportation Service Center manager. "This is a major north-south corridor for tourists and we arranged the schedule to have minimal impact on those motorists."
For the next few weeks, work will continue under the structure to complete substructure patching, cleanup, and restoration work, but this will not require a detour.
"There may be occasional, brief shoulder or lane closures, but there will be no weekend closures," Judge added.
This project included replacing the bridge deck and barrier wall, along with substructure and pier repairs.
This $2.2 million project will improve the ride quality and increase safety on the bridge.
