Motorists urged to "Dump the Pump" and try transit

WHAT: The third annual "Dump the Pump" Day -- an event designed to urge motorists in metropolitan Detroit and throughout the nation to choose public transportation as an alternative to high-priced gasoline.

WHO: Sponsored by V. 98.7 Smooth Jazz, AAA Detroit, the American Public Transit Association (APTA), the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT), the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART), the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG), the Compuware Commuter Assistance Center, and Transit Riders United (TRU)

WHEN: Thursday, June 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
(presentations begin at noon)

WHERE: Cadillac Square Park in downtown
Detroit (next to Campus Martius)

BACKGROUND: Transit agencies and advocates are joining forces to encourage motorists to take public transportation on this third annual "Dump the Pump" Day to beat rising fuel costs and help save the planet. Thursday's event will feature speakers, demonstrations on how to use public transit, fun prizes, and entertainment.
