June 26, 2008 -- Though a resurfacing project on M-26 through Lake Linden will last through much of this summer, the village will continue its Fourth of July festivities as scheduled.

Contractors for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) milled the surface of M-26 (Calumet Street) through Lake Linden in preparation for new asphalt paving. However, the paving is not scheduled to begin until later in July.

Village officials have decided to proceed with the community's Fourth of July celebration as planned, continuing a decades-long tradition. Construction on M-26 will be suspended during the holiday weekend.

"For the past 20 years, Lake Linden has been host to what's become a countywide event, with the largest fireworks display in the area on July 3," said village Clerk Bob Poirier. "We're pleased that MDOT is working with us to keep this tradition going."

Lake Linden's celebration will begin Thursday, July 3, in the village park, where 4,000 to 5,000 spectators will gather for refreshments and the fireworks display at dusk. At 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 4, the Grand Parade will proceed through town on M-26 from 10th Street to 1st Street. Children's games and races will be set up in the park, and a children's bicycle parade will begin at 6:30 p.m., following Front Street between the high school and the park.

Event brochures are available at local businesses and at the village Web site: www.lakelinden.net.

The work in Lake Linden is part of a larger project in which MDOT is resurfacing about 3.5 miles of M-26 from east of Dollar Bay to west of Tamarack City, and 2.1 miles from east of Hubbell through Lake Linden. This $2.6 million project is scheduled to be completed by early October.
