Railroad track replacement to shift traffic on M-59 in Macomb County starting July 25

July 21, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is partnering with the Canadian National (CN) Railroad to replace the railroad tracks that cross M-59 in Macomb County. Preliminary work has caused a single-lane closure on both eastbound and westbound M-59 between M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) and M-97 (Groesbeck Highway). This closure is necessary for crews to construct a temporary roadway in the median of M-59 to accommodate the upcoming traffic shift. The traffic shift is tentatively scheduled to occur on Friday, July 25.

Initially, eastbound M-59 traffic will be shifted to the westbound lanes with two lanes maintained in each direction. As the traffic is shifted, CN Railroad will replace the tracks that cross the eastbound side of the roadway, while contractor crews will reconstruct the approaches leading up to the tracks. Once completed, traffic will be shifted to the newly rebuilt eastbound lanes of M-59 as westbound is reconstructed. The traffic shifts are expected to remain in place until late August.

This $600,000 investment will greatly improve ride quality along the M-59 corridor.
