July 21, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin work on a $1.5 million project on US-131 near Schoolcraft on Wednesday, July 30.

Work includes 2.1 miles of asphalt resurfacing, concrete pavement repairs, sidewalk ramp and sign upgrades on US-131 from south of the village of Schoolcraft to South Street, and from Lyons Street to U Avenue.

In addition to the road improvements, MDOT will work with Grand Trunk Railroad to replace the railroad crossing at the south village limits of Schoolcraft.

"This project will provide a smoother ride and promote safety for motorists traveling in this area," said Pete Pfeiffer, manager of MDOT's Transportation Service Center in Kalamazoo.

One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on US-131 for the asphalt resurfacing project. During the railroad crossing work, all traffic will be detoured from Aug. 18 to 28. The detour route will follow XY Avenue, 14th Avenue, and Eliza Street.

"Although the 10-day detour for the railroad work will be painful, anyone who has driven this crossing can understand the need for more than superficial repairs," Pfeiffer said.

The entire project is scheduled for completion in September 2008.
