Southbound I-475 in Genesee County closing today

Contact:  Anita Richardson 989-754-0878, ext. 227
Agency: Transportation

August 5, 2008 -- Work is progressing on I-475 in Genesee County, where the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) continues reconstruction on 1.7 miles, from north of Saginaw Road (Exit 13) to the north junction of I-75 (Exit 125). This project, which began in April, includes ramp work, drainage improvements, and median crossover work. Work is expected to be completed by late September.

As the first phase of the project, reconstruction of I-475 northbound lanes, nears completion, crews are preparing to open the northbound lanes to traffic, beginning later this afternoon, Tuesday, Aug. 5. This work is weather-dependent.

"Once northbound I-475 lanes are open to traffic, I-475 southbound lanes at the I-75 split (exit 125) will be completely closed, with traffic detoured to southbound I-75 to eastbound I-69," said Michael Hemmingsen, MDOT Davison Transportation Service Center (TSC) manager.

During this second phase of the project, reconstruction of I-475 southbound lanes, motorists traveling northbound on I-75 who wish to access southbound I-475 will be detoured to the Mt. Morris Road interchange to southbound I-75 to the I-69 interchange, and east on I-69 to I-475.

In addition, ramp improvements will continue at the Clio Road/southbound I-475 interchange and at the north junction of I-475 at I-75. On- and off-ramps at the Clio Road interchange (Exit 16) will be closed to accommodate this work.

Motorists traveling north and southbound on Clio Road who wish to access southbound I-475 will follow an alternate route. Traffic will be detoured from Clio Road to northbound I-475 to southbound I-75, to eastbound I-69, where motorists then will follow the posted detour. Clio Road will have at least one lane open in each direction throughout this project.

No northbound I-47 5 lane closures will be permitted during this second phase; however, a northbound median shoulder closure will be permitted to allow grading, drainage, and median work.

For updates on this project, visit the list of statewide lane closures on the MDOT Web site at www.michigan.gov/laneclosures.

This $11.1 million project will promote safety by improving traffic flow and ride quality for many years to come.
