M-22 in Leelanau awarded National Scenic Byway funding

MDOT helps secure funding to preserve and enhance northern Michigan highway
The Michigan Department of Transportation helped secure nearly $45,000 in National Scenic Byway funding recently from the Federal Highway Administration for future M-22 projects in Leelanau County.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta announced Michigan as one of 38 states nationwide as recipients of the federal funding.

"These awards are merit-based and very competitive," said State Transportation Director Gregory J. Rosine. "This is great news for the state of Michigan and Leelanau County. We were up against some very tough competition."

National Scenic Byway funds enable states to undertake eligible projects along highways designated as All-American Roads, National Scenic Byways, and state-designated byways. Eligible under this program are planning projects to inventory, preserve and enhance the qualities of the byway, safety improvements, construction of bike and pedestrian facilities, and resource protection such as scenic easements.

“I am delighted that we have received resources so that we can now work with the communities along the route on projects of shared interest,” said Joanie Woods, chairperson of the Leelanau Heritage Route Committee.

The LHRC will engage partner agencies and local governments in facilitated work sessions to identify projects, explore funding opportunities and provide additional input. The LHRC will then identify a minimum of six projects that have broad community support, and develop implementation plans for those projects.
