Mobilization begins the week of Oct. 12 to replace 9 Mile bridge over I-75 in Oakland County

October 8, 2009 -- Contracting crews will begin mobilizing next week on the project to replace the Nine Mile Road overpass above I-75 in the community of Hazel Park, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). A portion of the Nine Mile Road overpass collapsed on July 15 when a crash involving a tanker truck caused an explosion and fire.

In order to accommodate this work, crews will close a single lane on the existing two-lane northbound and southbound service drives. In addition, there will be intermittent single-lane closures on each direction of I-75 for pier replacement work. MDOT has built into the contract lane rental charges in an effort to limit the impact on the motoring public.

In addition, MDOT used a design/build contract to expedite the completion of this work, which was awarded to Walter Toebe Construction Company of Wixom. Crews will rebuild the overpass starting this month and will open Nine Mile Road over I-75 this winter. Work to reconstruct the I-75 freeway under Nine Mile Road will begin in April. The reconstruction is necessary in order to improve the under clearance of the bridge. The reconstruction of the freeway is expected to be completed in mid-summer 2010.

MDOT is currently pursuing federal Emergency Relief Funds to cover up to 90 percent of this $11.8 million project.
