US-2 Cut River Bridge to reopen Monday

Contact:  James Lake, MDOT Office of Communications, 906-786-1830, ext. 323
Agency: Transportation

October 23, 2009 -- After two seasons of construction, the deck of the US-2 Cut River Bridge has been replaced, and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) expects to reopen the historic bridge to traffic on Monday, Oct. 26.

"We know that motorists and residents have eagerly anticipated the reopening of the Cut River Bridge," said Pete Paramski, delivery engineer at the MDOT Newberry Transportation Service Center (TSC). "We appreciate their patience and understanding during construction, while we worked to ensure the safety of our workers, motorists and pedestrians."

Originally scheduled to take place entirely in the 2008 construction season, unexpected construction conditions forced MDOT to postpone completion of the deck replacement project until this year. The project will extend the service life of this bridge, and improve ride quality and safety for motorists.

This project required a detour on nearby Cut River and Prater roads, adding seven to 10 minutes in travel time for through-traffic. The roadside parks located at each end of the bridge, which have been closed during construction, will remain closed until next spring.
